The autecology of eleven mediterranean octocoral species (3 Stolonifera, 4 Alcyonacea, 4 Gorgonacea) was studied near Banyuls-sur-Mer (southern France). Field observations were carried out by means of SCUBA-diving in forty underwater stations. The ecological amplitude of each species was determined for a number of abiotic factors, viz. water temperature, submarine irradiance, water movement, slope of substratum and sediment. In this way the ecological niche for the different species was defined. The niches of several species partly overlap: the survival “strategy” of these species was defined as “competitivity”. Other species display “specialization”, a strategy by which they avoid competitive situations. A third survival mechanism is “opportunism”,... |

Summary The present paper emphasizes the importance of a thorough evaluation of Jari Florestal e Agropecuária Ltda. as a model for development in the Amazon. This large scale commercial, plantation and agriculture venture has been suggested recurrently by various Brazilian planners as an appropriate model for development of other areas in the region. Jari is undertaking enormous silvicultural projects using Gmelina arborea and Pinus caribaea in "terra firme" (high ground) areas, and a mechanized agriculture scheme with irrigated rice culture in "várzea" (floodplain) areas. Based on observations and interviews made during visits to those projects, three principal questions are identified which need to be studied in order to evaluate the applicability of... |

Observations of peculiar volcanic objects, made by a submersible on the deep sea floor at a depth of about 2.600 m at and near the axis of the East Pacific Rise during the CYAMEX expedition as part of the RITA Project are presented here. Two basic types of flow forms were observed within the crestal area of the East Pacitic Rise : pillow flows and fluid lavas, the latter sometimes overlying massive flows. The East Pacific Rise at 21°N comprises an axial, unfaulted extrusion zone bordered by an extension zone chararterised by faulting. Pillow flows occupy the innermost or extrusion zone and constitute small elongated volcanic highs. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |
